Kent Opens Advanced Placement Class

The purpose of opening the advanced placement classes to promote an international level of talent training in the school and to cultivate innovative talents with an international vision and strong practical ability. While students acquiring academic curriculum knowledge and individual development. Their teamwork and sense of social responsibility are developed. There used to be “Four learnings”: learn to do, learn to be, learn to be with others and learn how to learn. The advanced placement class adds yet another; learn to lead.

In the classroom, the teacher and students together participate; the teacher captures the student’s attention and students actively contribute to the class.

Theoretical Concepts

At first, Ms. Ma introduced the theoretical basis of the class to students. The research theme of the first class focused on lean production. The Toyota Lean System was used as a case study with an emphasis on the understanding of waste, efficiency, inventory and the five principles of lean. In the second lesson, she went on to explain the concepts of punctuality, automation and engineering stability. The concept involves systemic output of comprehension, on which students could develop themselves more through practice.

Practical Concepts

Once students had been introduced to the theoretical basis of the class, Ms. Ma led the students through a set of three mini games. Students had the chance to understand the importance of layout and efficiency as well as to eliminate ineffective scheduling and labor wastage through the placement of tableware. The second class used coin transfer and “drawing pig” games to simulate the a production line. This allowed students to think about facility planning and to complete the work of the production line with the highest efficiency possible.

At the end of the program, the student discussed with Ms. Ma how to better implement the ideas they had learned.
